Why The Young Stay In College Longer These Days
October 7, 2013 by kmabarrett
I’ve heard kids say, “I might as well stay in school, what else am I going to do? There are no jobs.” I’ve also heard them say that they don’t want to grow up. That’s what we’ve made of the world. Incredible.
While the quote was serious, it was also a bit tongue-in-cheek – which is why I put a “humor” tag on it.
Having said that, I’ve also heard both statements from my kids and nephews. I think the unfortunate thing is we as a society have built up this unrealistic expectation that everyone will both know what they want to do for life and that they’ll immediately go right into the career of their choice / life.
From my experience, relatively few folks ever get the chance to do this. Gone are the days when farms and small shops are handed down from generation to generation. Even “skills” like machinist, plumbing and carpentry are rarely handed down, because the jobs aren’t there at companies where you can “learn” the trade in an apprenticeship.
By the way, thank you for the frequent comments!
