Are You Looking Forward To A Trump Presidency?
January 4, 2017 by kmabarrett
Well, we’ve had politicians in office for over 200 years (just how well has that worked out for us? We’ve been going down-hill for quite a while now) – let’s see if a non-politician does better or worse.
Hi GP,
Actually, I believe it’s worked out better more often than not. And when we’ve slipped, it’s been from societal factors and not directly political factors. (Although in the last 60 years, society has driven politics and we’ve seen the feedback loop which Eisenhower warned us about.)
PEOTUS says he would take ability over experience any day. I would not. His limited abilities as a businessman have been well documented (little). His ability as a campaigner is clear – he got the job. So, he’s a salesman. I’m not impressed. Let’s see if he can govern. I have my doubts.
Unfortunately, from my experience, people with ability and no experience rarely are successful when they come in at the top. Most of the time they do more harm than good and have to be replaced when they start their businesses on a death-spiral. (A classic example is Carly Fiorina. Although she was a senior manager / executive (AT&T), she was never the top dog. When she got placed in the top position (HP), she ended up lacking both the experience and the ability. Hence, her firing.)
Again, from my experience, people gain experience as they rise to the top based on ability. Trump has no experience in government and has shown no ability in his chosen field (business). He started off rich, lost most of it, inherited more wealth (to start again) and made money on money in a period when it was practically impossible to lose money. In fact, he’s made only slightly less money than you would have if you’d thrown darts at the stock pages of a newspaper 30 years ago. When you are already wealthy, a rising tide really does raise almost all boats.
Barring nuclear war, I doubt Trump can do anything to the country which can’t be undone. The question is how many will be hurt in the mean time. Like “W”, I expect Trump to drive the country deeper into debt and to virtually ruin the economy. I pray I’m wrong. I believe the United States is still the “light on the hill”. I hope it still is at the end of his term.
I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. I wish the economy and the country well. I just don’t believe Trump will be able (or try) to either help the working / middle class or leave the country in a better state than what it was when he gets sworn in.
Here’s to hoping I’m wrong…
As always, thanks for the visits and the comment!
Kevin
IMO, this country will need more than 4 to 8 years to be repaired. Lack of experience by the one-term senator we’ve had for 8 years showed his lack of experience and high opinion of himself with all his Executive Orders – and what did it get us – a health care program that is imploding and a very touch-and-go economy.
I’m sitting back and taking the ‘wait-and see’ attitude – I figure how much worse can it get!! I’m on a SS pension and getting poorer every day.
