We are the local embodiment of a Cosmos grown to self-awareness. We have begun to contemplate our origins: starstuff pondering the stars; organized assemblages of ten billion billion billion atoms considering the evolution of atoms; tracing the long journey by which, here at least, consciousness arose. Our loyalties are to the species and the planet. We speak for Earth. Our obligation to survive is owed not just to ourselves but also to that Cosmos, ancient and vast, from which we spring. | |

We Speak For Earth

That was beautiful! Thanks for posting this.
The honor is to serve…
I always liked Carl Sagan but I don’t think he knew humanity very well. The Universe, yes. Us…not so much. His dreams didn’t take into consideration that we are destroying the earth, poisoning Her and ourselves. Destroying our water, air, the earth Herself, as well as other species. We, as a species, seem determined to kill everything and, if we are honest about it, it seems to me that if the Great Mother is to survive…we need to become extinct. Then the Cosmos can get on with it and the Earth and all living things can flourish.
Hi Gigi,
Thanks for the comment!
As one of my prior posts says, “The survival value of human intelligence has never been satisfactorily demonstrated.”
I will say I don’t think you’re giving Carl enough credit. Like him, I am an optimist and believe we will find a way to “survive”. If not, I’m sure Mother Earth will simply try again.
