Posts Tagged ‘Veggie Juice’

Yesterday I completed Day 1 of my Veggie-Fruits Juice / Blend fast.  It’s pretty much the same as last years effort, but this year, for the first few days anyway, I’m skipping the straight-up “juice” and going right to the “blend”.  In a nutshell, this means I’m dicing up my fruit and veggies and just blending them with water and additional fruit / veggie “juice”.  Yes, the additional stuff is processed and not terrible healthy, but it’s a sacrifice I’m making to save time and expense.
My starting weight yesterday was 373lbs and this morning I was already down 2lbs.  So, I’m at 371lbs.  That’s pretty normal as the blend tends to flush out most of the solid material from your (my) digestive tract.  From experience, I normally drop 10lbs in the first 5 to 7 days.  We’ll see…
From experience, the first three or four days are the worst part physically as I will be grumpy, tired and missing the simple act of chewing.  “My” style of fasting is not particularly restricting on calories.  Yes, processed fruit juices have a high amount of sugar (fructose) content, but absorption is slowed by the roughage of the blended veggies (onions, celery, cucumber, carrots) and fruit (apples, berries, bananas, pineapple).  I also blend in about two cups of beans.  I vary them between weeks (pinto, black and kidney).  In all, I probably have close to a gallon of “blend” per day.  It actually ends up being more than that consumed as I continually add ice to keep the drink cool.
Yesterday, I went for my normal 30 minute dog walk and an additional 60 minutes of treading water at my local swimming pool.  I’ve been trying to swim as often as possible this year, but I am only averaging about every other or every third day  (mostly third).  I seem to go on streaks and then my built up list of things to do gets too long and I have to spend a couple of days whittling the list down.  (That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it…)
The good news is that as I’m ending my second day, my fingers, hands, wrists, feet and ankles are already feeling considerably less bloated.  The flip side (the bad news) is that passing all the solids and acidic fluids leaves one with a bit of a  burning bum.  This too shall pass…  (Yes, mild poop humor.)
The key (again, from my experience) is to never get so hungry (either real hunger or empty stomach) that you start to obsess about food.  This means drinking the blend regularly (to maintain your blood-sugar level) and supplementing it with regular water (or herbal tea) which acts to keep your stomach full (physically) which tricks your mind into not being hungry.  By this means, I can increase activity and (over time) modify (decrease) caloric input to lose weight.  Weight loss always comes down to three things: 1) move more; 2) eat less; and, 3) eat better (healthier & more natural).
So, the journey begins again.  The current plan is to juice for a week and then switch to the Modified Alternate Day Fasting (MADF), which I have been unsuccessfully trying since February of this year.  Over the course of the next few days / weeks, I’ll discuss some of my views on why the MADF has not been successful for me and why I’m fairly confident this jump start will help in this next go around.  While on this path, I will try to post every day on how I’m doing.  These posts will tend to be longer than my normal (quotes) posts, so if you are not interested in my dieting process, just skip the long post and enjoy my other shorter post(s).  Stay tuned…
Oh, yeah…  Before I forget:  I am NOT a health professional NOR have I been trained in medicine or psychology.  Take EVERYTHING you read on my blog about dieting / fasting with a grain of salt and a heaping dose of skepticism.  I have read lots of books and watched hundreds of hours of YouTube & TED videos about health, sleeping, dieting, working out, etc and most of them contradict each other in detail while agreeing on generalities.  ALWAYS consult with your personal healthcare provider before engaging in any of my crazy ideas / practices or beginning any change in diet or fitness program.

The end of day twelve and the start of day thirteen…
Morning weight:  355lbs.  A couple of days ago I mentioned the scale is bouncing around a bit and giving me questionable readings.  A couple of days ago I put my weight at 358lbs and then yesterday at 356lbs.  Both times the loss was 2lbs overnight.  The scale was actually reading 355lbs and 353lbs respectively.  Today, the low was closer to 350lbs, but I’m now sure I don’t trust the scale, so I’m going with 355lbs.  As with any scale, if you move around or lean one direction or another, you can get a different reading.  I’m trying to read from the same place every time to stay consistent.  In my case, that is with big toes and heals touching with toes directly under the “0” on the scale face.  I also try to balance without leaning forwards or backwards.  My feet are too big to fit entirely on the scale, so all of this is a rough estimate / best guess.   The bottom line is this puts me at 15lbs of real weight loss in only twelve days (and 25lbs total).  Oh, yeah…  I made more veggie-juice today.  It should be enough to get me through the weekend (or very close).
Other developments:  I went to the urologist today.  He said my ultra-sounds are not conclusive and I need a CT scan of my kidneys to see if there are stones.  He said it’s unlikely the cysts are the problem and it’s more likely I simply have a very specific groin muscle tear which I keep aggravating.  I can’t see how that is possible (myself), but I will go get the CT just to make sure.  It has to clear the insurance and then get scheduled, so it may be a few weeks.  If it is just a muscle tear, the “fix” is to do as little as possible.  I don’t see how it can be a muscle tear as I don’t know how it would come and go and sometimes be “background” pain and other times feel like it’s going to kill me (double me up / practically in tears painful).  For me, the big problem was the appointment was 11:45am, so I had to go most of the day without topping up my energy with normal amounts of juice.  I got through it, but I don’t like waiting around.  Not drinking enough regularly causes me confusion, dizziness and makes me feel weak.  This is almost certainly just a lack of sugar in my blood system as an ounce or two of juice and I’m good for another hour or so with symptoms completely gone.
Update on the door:  It is still scrapping, but I was able to fix the “top lock” / dead bolt.  I just took off the face plate and chiseled out a bigger hole.  I then reset the face plate and voila – the door locks normally again.  I have to be careful or I might turn out to be a useful handyman in my retirement…  🙂

The end of day eleven and the start of day twelve…
Morning weight: 356lbs.  The scale actually read under 355lbs, but that can not possibly be correct so I am just subtracting 2lbs from yesterday’s weight total.  That’s 24lbs of total weight loss at the end of 11 days.  Obviously, this much weight loss is not sustainable.  IMHO.  It is only possible when you are experiencing rapid weight loss due to elimination of waist in your stomach.  In any case, my expectation is to lose about 1lb per day.  I’m sure the law of diminishing returns will kick in soon and it will much more difficult to lose 2lbs, let alone 3 to 5lbs in a single day.  I guess I know more tomorrow.
Another bad night for sleep.  We were still tired from the prior night, so we went to bed early.  11:00pm  —  Yes, I know, but that’s early for us.  It didn’t help.  Hil fell straight to sleep and I tossed for and hour before falling to sleep.  I then woke up at 3am.  I tossed for another hour (until 4:00am).  When I could not go back to sleep, I decided to get up and read.  I read some emails, played around on my blog and then finally walked the dog at 7am.  The sky was (is still) grey and full of smoke from the wildfires up north.  The sun was bright red and so diffuse you could look directly at it for a second or two (without seeming to hurt your eyes).
I got in my hour of treading water at the pool and upped the twisting motion to four sets of 100 (4X100).  I expect I may get up to 10 sets if I keep practicing.  I’m thinking of naming the twisting motion “agitator”, as I feel like the agitator in a cloth’s washer.  And it sure does make one puff.  It’s kind of like a sprint.
Once again, too lazy to make veggie juice.  I got by on mixed fruit juice, but it is waaaayyy too sweet and doesn’t leave me feeling anywhere near as “clean” inside at my veggie juices.  I am committing to making another bunch of veggie juice (swamp juice) tomorrow.  Ideally, that will get me through 14 days / 2 weeks (this Friday).
We’ll see.  Day by day…
