When I was young, I thought I’d write the Great American Novel.  I had no idea what it would be about or how to go about it, but I thought it would be a “worthy” goal in life which one could accomplish fairly independently even if one were not particularly “accomplished” in other aspects of one’s life (fame, wealth, marriage, children or education) to start off with.  I also felt it might be important at some point to be able to look back at one’s life to “examine” it.
So, I started a journal which I maintained (more or less) for about fifteen years – off and on.  In it, I recorded the books I’d read, quotes, ideas, comics clippings and then, ultimately, I began to include personal notes.  After I got to the third volume, I decided they each needed cover pages with an appropriate saying.  The first one I decided on was a line from a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson: “To strive, To seek, To find, And not to yield“.

I find the line to be particularly appropriate today, as we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.  A commitment to non-violent protest which can change a nation…  What a concept!
