Humans are a social species, equipped with few defenses against the natural world beyond our ability to acquire knowledge and stay in groups that work together.  We are particularly susceptible to glimmers of novelty, messages of affirmation and belonging, and messages of outrage toward perceived enemies.  These kinds of messages are to human community what salt, sugar, and fat are to the human appetite.  And Facebook gorges us on them — in what the company’s first president, Sean Parker, recently called “a social-validation feedback loop.”

Sure, it is a golden age of free speech — if you can believe your lying eyes.

There are, moreover, no nutritional labels in this cafeteria.  For Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, all speech — whether it’s a breaking news story, a saccharine animal video, an anti-Semitic meme, or a clever advertisement for razors — is but “content,” each post just another slice of pie on the carousel.  A personal post looks almost the same as an ad, which looks very similar to a New York Times article, which has much the same visual feel as a fake newspaper created in an afternoon.
What’s more, all this online speech is no longer public in any traditional sense.  Sure, Facebook and Twitter sometimes feel like places where masses of people experience things together simultaneously.  But in reality, posts are targeted and delivered privately, screen by screen by screen.  Today’s phantom public sphere has been fragmented and submerged into billions of individual capillaries.  Yes, mass discourse has become far easier for everyone to participate in — but it has simultaneously become a set of private conversations happening behind your back.  Behind everyone’s backs.

This is the America we live in…
In this country, professional athletes can be blackballed from employment or fined by the their league for peaceful protest against an unfair criminal justice system.  And, the President can call them: “SOB’s” who should be fined or fired or deported.
In this country, the executive branch (President) can use border control and immigration staff to forcibly separate children from their parents because the families are seeking entry into the United States.  Some of the families are attempting to enter illegally.  Some are attempting to enter legally and seeking asylum.  Some are attempting to enter illegally and seeking asylum.  It is my understanding ALL groups are having their families / children separated until the asylum request has been adjudicated and / or the illegal entries have been processed.  And the kicker is there is no system to track which children are which and / or track them for reunification with their parents / family once a decision has been made.
The President is blaming the Democrats because they haven’t solved the immigration problem – even though it is the Republicans which control both houses of Congress, the Executive Branch and conservative Justices (appointed by Republican Presidents) form the majority of the US Supreme Court.
The Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security says: “We are just doing our job trying to enforce the laws…”
For once, I can agree with a Republican: Senator John McCain (on Twitter):
“The administration’s current family separation policy is an affront to the decency of the American people, and contrary to principles and values upon which our nation was founded.  The administration has the power to rescind this policy.  It should do so now.”
But remember, according to President Trump: It is the Fake News (Free Press) which is the Country’s greatest enemy.

All should appreciate the FBI speaking up.  I wish more of our leaders would.  But take heart: American history shows that, in the long run, weasels and liars never hold the field, so long as good people stand up.  Not a lot of schools or streets named for Joe McCarthy.

During the campaign it was widely reported that then candidate Trump was the most dishonest candidate running for President.  (That’s Politically Correct “speak” for Trump was the biggest liar.)   Trump’s honesty rating (according to Politifact.com) was 15% – “true” (4%) or “mostly true” (11%) – and 85% dishonest – “half true” (15%), “mostly false” (19%), “false” (34%), and “pants on fire” (17%).
Trump is now on his Twitter account denying the recent reports (by various media) of “disarray” on his transition team.  Trump reports everything is going “smoothly”.
To quote Groucho Marx: “Who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes.
To quote Abraham Lincoln: “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.
