Every couple of months Hil and I take a short drive over to the marina in Martinez (CA).  Most of the time we take our dog (Shiva) along to give her some fresh smells.  Shiva is over 10 years old and her most active days are well behind her, but she loves going out in the car (as well as the fresh smells).  Here’s a picture of Shiva and me (taken by Hil), giving her a rest and a chance to catch her breath.
The marina faces north towards the Carquinez Straits which connects the Sacramento River with the north end of San Francisco Bay.  Because it’s right on the water, when the tide shifts in the Bay, the water flow speeds up or slows down, the air flow increases or slows and there is almost always a cooling breeze.  Plus it’s a great view!  Oh, and by the way…  mid-February and it’s low to mid-70’s.  I didn’t “need” the sweatshirt, but I brought along in case the wind was too much.

49ers Going To SB54!!!

Yes!!!   Today, my “local” American Football team, the San Francisco 49ers (who are actually based in the San Jose / Santa Clara area) defeated the Green Bay Packers by the score of 37 to 20 (and it really wasn’t that close) in the NFL National Conference championship game.  Now, on we move on to face the Kansas City Chiefs in two weeks at a neutral location (Miami, Florida) for Superbowl LIV (that’s 54 for those of you who don’t know your Roman numerals).
This is a hard game for me because although I’m a lifetime supporter of the “Niners”, but I was born in Kansas City and, until the 1990’s, supported the Chiefs as my “AFC” (American Football Conference) team.  The 49ers are in the Western Division of the National Football Conference (“NFC”).  So, either way, I can’t “lose” the game, but I sure will be rooting for the Red and GoldGo Niners!!!

Over the weekend, my cousin Tony (from Arizona) dropped in for a little business (on Monday) and a quick weekend visit with friends and family (us).  I hadn’t seen my cousin since 1971!  (That’s 48-odd years!! for you math challenged readers.)  Anyway, we went out to lunch and to support my brother-in-law who was playing in a “teachers” band at a charity event (and beer tasting).  He teaches music in one of the local school districts and he’s part of a orchestra of teachers from the various school districts in the Oakland, California area.
In the group photo you see (L to R): me, my wife (Hilary), my cousin (Tony), my mother (Carmen), my nephew (Kyle) and my sister (Carmen).
In this photo are: me, Hil and Kelly (a friend of my nephew).
The music was good and lively.  The beer and wine tasting was excellent.  (I was told…  I was driving.)  And, a great time was had by all.  I made my cousin promise not to wait another 48 years to visit us again and he promised he wouldn’t.
