Ideals are the most powerful force known to man.  No nation’s greatness long survives the lowering of the greatness of its ideals.  And as with nations, so with individuals.  Low ideals and high station cannot long retain company.  We all must have ideals unless we are content to drift along aimlessly, ambitionless, ineffectually.  Ideals vitalize, ideals energize.

The temptation comes to many, early or late, to sink into the attitude of regarding life as a little thing.  Some become cynics.  Some become wholly callous.  Some cease existing themselves.  Others lapse into habits they formerly would have condemned.  This temptation to degenerate into looking upon life as a matter of little moments must be fought and overcome.  Perhaps the most effective safeguard against drifting into this deadly mental state is to associate freely with children and other young people.  Our life can become big only when we look upon living as something affecting not only ourselves.

It usually takes a big man to delegate responsibilities to others – and then leave these others to handle them.  He will install a man, give him a free hand and watch results.  He does not actively supervise his men, but he does – actively and minutely – supervise the results.  The man afraid to deputize will retard growth – his own and that of his organization.

Honesty is the cornerstone of character.  The honest man or woman seeks not merely to avoid criminal or illegal acts, but to be scrupulously fair, upright, fearless in both action and expression.  Honesty pays dividends both in dollars and in peace of mind.

The true purpose of recreation should not be merely to amuse, not merely to afford pleasure, not merely to “kill time”, but to increase our fitness, enhance our usefulness, spur achievement.  Any form of recreation that impairs either our physical or mental efficiency does not recreate.  Real recreation quickens aspirations.

Excitability often springs from incompetency.  The man who is master of his job usually can keep calm.  He knows how to meet each situation that arises and does so capably, without fussing or fuming.  To get a better grip on your temper, get a better grip on your job.
