POEM: Lesson Learned | |
If I’ve learned anything,
if the years of schooling and the degrees have done me any good,
if the stacks of books that have passed before my eyes shed any light,
it’s the recognition of the ubiquity of darkness,
& | |
of the fact | |
that it’s better to learn to cautiously navigate the cave
than to pretend there’s no darkness.

Give me a room whose every nook is dedicated to a book.
— Robert Southey | |
[We recently had a neighbor drop in. She had been discussing books with my wife and wanted to drop off one she had just finished and was recommending. (Readers are the biggest “pushers” in the world.) Anyway, the neighbor was saying she had far too many books and she needed to donate / give away some of them. My wife chuckled. The neighbor looked quizzical… I opened the door to one of my rooms and she saw a wall of books / LP’s / CD’s approximately 18ft long and shelved from floor to ceiling (mostly books). I said that’s only one of two rooms. My wife thanked her and said she’ll be happy to borrow some books. — kmab]

I Learn Something New

THE IMPORTANCE OF PERIODIC REVIEW
For precisely the reasons I’ve just outlined — that science is a process, not a set of accepted facts — it’s a good idea (and very common) for scientists, whether professionals or students, to review for themselves both how the scientific web of knowledge was assembled historically, and how it holds together nowadays. This kind of exercise is a sort of brain calisthenics; it keeps the mind fresh and clear.
Every time I reconsider what I know from scratch, I learn something new. Typically I find connections between well-known facts that I hadn’t previously recognized. Sometimes I discover gaps in my own logic, and a couple of times in my career I’ve even discovered gaps in the scientific community’s logic. So it’s well worth going through this kind of introspection, even starting at the beginning with basic astronomy.

First, I do not sit down at my desk to put into verse something that is already clear in my mind. If it were clear in my mind, I should have no incentive or need to write about it. We do not write in order to be understood; we write in order to understand.

A Reminder Of Pride And Responsibility
Posted in Philosophy, Quotes, tagged Canada, Code Of Ethics, Obligation Of An Engineer, Obligation Of The Order, Order Of The Engineer, Philosophy, Quotes, Ritual Of The Calling, Symbols, Wikipedia on February 15, 2022| Leave a Comment »
The Order of the Engineer is an association for graduate and professional engineers in the United States that emphasizes pride and responsibility in the engineering profession. It was inspired by the success of the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer, a similar and much older Canadian ceremony, and is a common presence in American engineering schools.
Oath: | |
Before joining, members must take an oath to abide by a code of ethics called the “Obligation of an Engineer“:
I am an Engineer. In my profession, I take deep pride. To it, I owe solemn obligations.
As an engineer, I pledge to practice integrity and fair dealing, tolerance and respect, and to uphold devotion to the standards and dignity of my profession. I will always be conscious that my skill carries with it the obligation to serve humanity by making the best use of the Earth’s precious wealth.
As an engineer, I shall participate in none but honest enterprises. When needed, my skill and knowledge shall be given, without reservation, for the public good. In the performance of duty, and in fidelity to my profession, I shall give my utmost.
… | |
During the ceremony, engineering graduates take the Obligation of the Order. After each member takes the obligation, they put their hand through a large representation of the Engineer’s Ring. A member of the Order of the Engineer then places a stainless steel ring, known as the Engineer’s Ring, onto the little finger of the graduate’s dominant hand. The ring is worn on the little finger so that it will drag across any surface on which the wearer writes, providing a constant reminder of the engineer’s oath.
Each inductee takes the obligation, signs a certificate of obligation and wears the ring as a symbol of their pride in the Order and their obligation to the profession, as well as the public. Often, friends and family join the new initiates to celebrate after the ceremony.
