[IMHO: Republican Senators will NEVER convict a former President IF he is a Republican. But heaven help any former President who happens to be a Democrat if the Republicans EVER get control of both the House and the Senate (at the same time) again. Every living former Democratic President will be up for impeachment. Mark my words!!! — kmab] | |

Will Republican Senators Convict A Former President?

you are spot on
Hi Beth,
Yes… Unfortunately, Democrats have a tendency to pay less attention to off year elections (more than Republicans). This is why the 1% can spend so little to take over so many states – the elections are cheaper to “buy-up”. They then control the state-houses and redistricting / gerrymandering to ensure they have more winnable seats than they should based on actual population. This is why they are “confident” of retaking the House in 2022 (the next off-year). Unless the Democrats can mount a 45 to 50 state “Stacey Abrams” type campaign to defeat them, the Republicans will probably succeed. Effectively, this means Biden has two years to get anything done, before he loses control of at least one branch of Congress. This is what happened in 2009 / 2010. The Republicans stalled Obamacare until it became a last minute vote with insufficient time for major provisions to kick in. They also set it up (with Dem compliance) so it took a number of years to kick in. This meant Obamacare “appeared” to be a failure for it’s first four years. Eventually, Obamacare became popular, but it was too late to save the 2010 and 2012 elections. Yes, Obama got re-elected, but again we lost ground in Congress. This lent itself to the long-term failure of Obama to get legislation passed AND to the failure to get moderate judges onto the Federal bench.
This is what they are trying to do now with the counter-offer on COVID relief… Delay and reduce under the guise of bi-partisanship. 1/3rd is not a serious offer. It is the appearance of being willing to negotiate for political platforms next year. Let’s see if Biden, Pelosi and Shumer learned from the last decade or not. I’m betting they will try to be “reasonable”. In other words: “OR NOT”. If Trump is convicted in the Senate, I’ll change my tune, but until then, I’m singing the same ole song: “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, Shame on me!”
Okay, I’ll get off my soap-box…
