The end of day nineteen and the start of day twenty…
Morning weight: 345lbs. No change from yesterday…
I am still down “28/35”. As in, 28lbs down from my fasting start weight: 373lbs, and 35lbs down from my highest weight ever (two days before I started the fast): 380lbs. The scale is bouncing between 342 and 345, so I am being conservative.
Yesterday I made a new batch of veggie juice. I took the roughage and added water, vinegar and crushed garlic and let the mixture chill in the fridge overnight. Today I boiled it up, strained out the roughage and ended up with about 32+ ounces of broth. I’m not exactly sure how much I have but it’s less than a gallon. I did have two large mugs today and barely made a dent in it. I could smell the vinegar and the garlic while it cooked, but I sure can’t taste them. To tell the truth, it just tastes a lot like warmed up celery and cucumber veggie juice. Still, it’s warm and a different taste than the regular veggie juice or veggie juice with fruit juice.
Today I had my strongest urge so far to raid the cupboard. I got through it, but it was tougher psychologically than it was physically. I wasn’t “hungry”. I just had an urge to chew on / taste some cashews. My mind convinced me that if I chewed them up until there were no chunks left, I’d still be “juicing”. I got through the urge, but only because when I looked, there were none there (in the cupboard). So it was more lack of opportunity than self-control. LOL
Tomorrow I start the 21st day and finish the 3rd week on Friday at noon. I should be able to make that ok, but Friday itself will be difficult because I’m planning to go up and visit my brother for the day. Changes in my routine almost always means stress. And coping with stress usually means “cheating” on my diet – or, in this case, my fast. So, we’ll see, my fast may come to a screeching end. And, yes, this is what I mean when I say I am not just fasting. I’m also trying to change my “relationship” with food and eating.

Day 19: Broth
August 15, 2018 by kmabarrett
Between my spouse and I, we need to lose 150, so I’m printing this out and THANK YOU!!
No problem, sir. The honor is to serve…
🙂
I need to lose a lot of weight and don’t mind a few liquid meals, but exactly what kind of diet is this?
Hi GP,
First, let me apologize for the length of this reply. I assume you want a more thorough / complete answer…
The “diet / fast” I am currently on is based on the movie “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” and the book “Eat to Live“. There is also “influence” from the books: “The Fat Smash Diet“, “The Okinawa Program” and “Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease“. All of which I have read and tried (meals and program) to one extent or another and with various amounts of success / failure.
Before I go any further, I want to emphasize you should talk with your personal doctor before starting on any diet, exercise program or significant (physical) lifestyle change.
Having said that, I need to ask you:
what do you mean by “a lot” of weight,
what is your goal (what weight would you like to be),
do you have any other health issues which might be affected by a “radical” diet,
how committed are you to starting and reaching your goal, and,
how many other times and diets have you tried in order to lose weight?
The bottom line for losing weight and getting more fitness is AND WILL ALWAYS BE: eat better, eat less, move more…
You will absolutely need to talk about this (losing weight) with your spouse, family and friends. They will be your support network.
My normal suggestions (note: these are for someone my age 60+ yrs old with a 3 to 6 month timeframe for losing weight):
Check with your doctor to make sure there is nothing physical which will stop you from losing weight (hormones, bad heart, high blood pressure, diabetic, etc.)
Set your mind to lose 1 pound per week and “around” 5 pounds per month. 4lbs is good; 5lbs is great.
Step 1 (first three months)-
Goal <=15lbs:
Sleep 7-9 hours per night. If you can’t sleep that long at night, make up the difference with naps during the day. Shoot for two 45minute naps, rather than 1 longer nap.
ALWAYS eat breakfast.
Walk at a normal pace (you should be able to hold a conversation) for 30min EVERY day. You can NOT double up. 60min one day does NOT equal 30+30 on two days.
Bend over and try to touch your toes and hold it for 10-15 seconds. 5 times a day spread over the day is good; 10 times a day is great.
Drink 1 gallon of water EVERY day. (Get used to going to the john.) Again, spread through the day. Not all at once.
Step 2 (4 to 6 months; you should already be 10-15lbs lighter)
Goal <=30lbs:
Same as above, plus –
East fresh fruit and vegetables for every snack and with every meal! Frozen vegetables are the next best. Never eat vegetables from a can UNLESS all alternatives are known to be worse.
Read all labels and avoid as much packaged foods as possible. Watch out for salt and added sugar – particularly MSG and High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). ABSOLUTELY no soda or anything (other than fresh fruit and vegetables) labeled “no-fat”, “low-fat” or “reduced-fat”.
Drink a 16oz glass of water 15minutes before ALL meals. The colder, the better. Ice in the glass does not count. Half ice, drink two glasses.
If you are able to: 3 sets of 10 pushups, 3 sets of 10 squats and 3 sets of 10 stomach vacuums. Do one set of all three exercises three times per day (morning, noon, and evening).
If you have some other exercise you ENJOY, try to do it three times per week for at least 45min each time.
Step 3 (after at least 6 months of above; you should now be 30-45lbs lighter)
Goal >30lbs:
Same as above, plus –
I do NOT believe the “average” person can jump into a juice fast OR a seriously restrictive diet and expect more than very limited results. The body is stronger than the mind. They ONLY time I believe it is possible is if there is an imminent threat of death: “Stop now or you will be dead in 6 months.” The human body has thousands of years of evolution and obesity is a relatively recent (the last 50 years) social pandemic. The body simply hasn’t had enough time to adapt to what we are asking of it. And the body, really doesn’t care what the mind thinks (over the long haul). On top of that, it is anecdotally evident to have originated in the United States and spread worldwide as other countries have adopted our processed food industries. The lesson is: it’s what we are eating (processed foods) and it’s what we are no longer doing (staying physically active as we get older).
If you are this far along, you have already been dieting and exercising for 6 months and you are now experienced enough with thinking about your body, your diet and the exercises you like that you can better evaluate what your next steps will be… For most people that will mean just continuing to combine steps 1 and 2. However…
If you are starting out morbidly obese (100lbs more than your maximum normal weight) you may need to do more. My suggestion is to simply do longer and not more. If you would rather do what I do, instead of doing what I say: try veggie juice fasting. Start with substituting the juice for one meal a day – dinner. If, after a month, you find you are comfortable with this then try a three-day all-day just juice fast. Then go back to 1 juice dinner for 2 weeks. Repeat three times. This should take a month – 3X3 fasts plus 3 weeks of juice dinner = 30 days.
If you are still comfortable, try a week or 10 day fast. Always remember to ease back into food for a couple of days after each fast and continue to substitute veggie juice for dinner.
I hope this information helps. Remember, you only need to have a calorie difference of 500 per day to lose one(1) pound per week.
Good luck and let me know if you have any other specific questions. Just remember: I am not a doctor and I can only tell you info based on what I’ve heard, seen, read and personally experienced. Let me know how you get on.
