I’ve never really understood what that means about the abyss. How can an abyss look at you, it’s an abyss…Unless it just means that you go nuts, which is how most people seem to interpret it.

I think if you think of the world as you and everything else, then the “abyss” is just another “other” thing. If you think of the world as “one”, then you can recognize the “abyss” as a part of yourself. This, in turn, opens the abyss as something with the potential to swallow you whole (if you let it). Although I do not suffer from depression, this is very much what I think it must be like. Without the experience, I can only make this reference second hand – like trying to explain the difference between the colors yellow and red to someone who was born blind.
