I wonder what the new “dominant” species would look like!
I have “wondered” about that, too. My guess would be another small mammalian species if the ecology hasn’t been too badly compromised. If the environment is too badly damaged for a lower order of mammals (rats), then I’d bet on ants or roaches. Both share the advantages of fast breeding and already being spread widely around the globe, so the odds are there might be sufficient food sources to support a population until “life” finds a way to replenish the seas and oxygen producing flora. Without the seas or oxygen, we’re talking about starting back from square one in evolution – micro-organisms and simple, multi-cell organisms.
But that’s just my guess… Anything is possible.
