I too, have found your observation to be accurate. Group ethics, no matter how well indoctrinated, don’t come into play until at least one individual “stands-up” and says (or does) the right thing. Then others will follow. When they don’t, it is because they lack the courage of their convictions/ethics and therefore it is easier to hate (in shame) the one who does stand up than it is to admit one’s personal weakness and then stand-up too. However, once another does, the standing-up becomes infectious and more and more will join, more and more quickly.
