One glance at (a book) and you hear the voice of another person – perhaps someone dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, the author is speaking, clearly and silently, inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people, citizens of distant epochs, who never knew one another. Books break the shackles of time. | |

You’re speaking to a lover of reading. This, for one who can’t get enough of the written word, is a great quotation. Even to think about the wealth of information and pleasure readers derive sends me looking for something to read. I recently read a five page article on “ripples” in the universe, predicted by Einstein and found I think it was a man named Gout, and I couldn’t put it down Life can be so interesting! Scientists are predicting it will be the greatest information ever to be “found” by scientists.
Hi Marie,
Thanks for the comment!
Yes, I read something similar about the discovery of gravitron waves, which scientist believe are an “echo” of creation. It’s “funny” because they say that while nothing can exceed the speed of light, the essence of space/time can exceed the speed of light, which is how the universe (as we know it) managed to come into being in a process they are referring to as “inflation”. Smarter people than me are working on this, so we’ll have to see where it all leads us.
As for the quote, I think the idea of someone speaking to me across time was a terrific way to describe both reading and the idea of a personal immortality some authors are able to enjoy. Like a visiting friend from far away, you get to invite them into your warm house for a “discussion” as you sit in your favorite reading chair with a mug of cocoa nearby.
Exactly. Thanks for your comment.
