I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together. | ||

I like most of her quote, but when I read “…you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself,…” it saddened me. I now believe that I have a bit better of an understanding as to how she could have been so lonely and miserable that suicide seemed the best way out to her. I believe she learned the wrong lesson about people and lies, and chose the wrong friends, perhaps leaving behind those she could trust for those she couldn’t.

Hi Russ,
In isolation (and with hind-sight) I agree that phrase is sad as a portending of her ultimate end. In the context of the paragraph, though, I found it insightful, powerful and hopeful – which is why I posted it. It was so surprising to me!
The story has always been that Marilyn “committed” suicide; the conspiracy has always been that she was “assisted”.
In the end, I fear, Norma Jean’s darkness got the better of her when the light wavered. But I see a different person now when I watch a movie with her in it.
so true….I have seen many doors close in my life just to have others open
Hi Bryan,
Thanks for the comment.
So many times, we’re told to grab every opportunity because you only get one shot at life. Actually, from my experience, we all get lots of opportunities, the problem is we can never know – in advance – which will have a profound impact on our lives and which will be trivial.
As they say in Harry Potter: “It’s not our abilities which make us who we are, it’s our choices.”
