Praise not the day until evening has come; a woman until she is burnt; a sword until it is tried; a maiden until she is married; ice until it has been crossed; beer until it has been drunk. | |

I wake and praise God for the day. Being fully aware that this might well become a red letter day of horror, I have learned to accept what He decides to give me. It would be a sure shot to say that any level headed Viking (if there was such a thing) who truly believed that saying was not, in the slightest aspect, a Christian.
God is Great! (Allah Akbar!) I too wake and praise God for the day. I also thank God at the end of each day. And, many times, when I feel God’s graces touch me during the day, I give thanks then, too. I don’t know that many Vikings, level-headed or not, were Christians, although most of their lands were eventually converted. The quote was not directed at religion (capital or lower case). Rather, I found it interesting as a practicalist view of the world. Not optimistic – “yea, I survived another night”; not pessimistic – “damn, now I gotta go find another meal”; but practical (wait and see) – “we’ll know if it’s good when we see the ending / taste the results”.
In any case, the “Viking proverb” was from the forward of a book written by Michael Crichton and I have not been able to find any alternate source, so it is probably simply a turn of phrase by a professional writer. If you’ve looked at the quotes on my blog and my own writings, being “Christian” is not a criteria for appearing on my site. For most quotes on my blog, I do not even have to agree / disagree with the quote… It is enough to find the words quoted to be thought provoking (to me) in the market-place of ideas.
