The whole of modern civilization is based on the idea that the specialized function which gives a man his place in society is more important than the whole man, or rather is the whole man, all the rest being irrelevant or even positively harmful and detestable. The low-brow of our modern industrialized society has all the defects of the intellectual and none of his redeeming qualities. | |

I am not sure that Huxley is a good source on these matters. He was an advocate of eugenics.
The content may or may not have been taken completely out of context and the source may or may not have been an advocate of eugenics. I don’t know because I read it in isolation. My question to you is: “Considering the words as presented, do you agree or disagree? And why?” Irrespective of the original author or the context the quote is taken from, is the point valid? Is any (does any) special knowledge, skill or inate talent make up the whole of you? Are you simply a musician or music teacher? Are you not also a cousin, brother, husband, son, father, uncle? Does the facet you present (like a gem) make up the whole of you or are you the sum of all the facets as well as the surface area and volume? Does society (however you choose to define that word) / modern civilization “get” to decide what makes you – you. Or do you get to decide? These are some of the questions the quote made me think of when I read it – and that is why I offered it up on my blog.
Accepting your premise that Huxley was an advocate of eugenics, does that facet of his life have any bearing on the validity of his comment/observation? Would you choose to have EVERY decision / action from your life – sin and virtue – appended with “he was a pro-life advocate”?
